Mermaids on a Mission to Save the Oceans for Earth Day

πŸ“… April 13, 2026 πŸ‘€ Janet Balletta

Create an Ocean Pledge for Earth Day and teach children how to care for the ocean, which makes up 70% of Earth. Begin by reading my K-2 children’s book, Mermaids on a Mission to Save the Oceans, teaching environmental awareness, water pollution, and conservation. Be sure to emphasize how people, animals, and habitats are interdependent for survival. Become a Mermaid/Merman Ocean Guardian.

After reading the book, engage the children in a discussion on things they can do to keep the ocean and Earth beautiful. For example, they can Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Brainstorm their ideas on chart paper and let the kids make Ocean Pledges for Earth Day. It’s also a great idea for a classroom Bulletin Board.

Another exciting hands-on activity is to simulate an Oil Spill Clean-up Experiment in the classroom. Kids love doing science experiments, and research shows children retain more when they are actively involved in learning. This experiment is fun and easy.

If you would like to try these activities, the free learning activities are on my website: janetballetta.net. Finally, remind the children that Earth Day is every day, and they can help to protect our beautiful blue planet. Happy Earth Day!
